During her Union Budget 2025-26 address on February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled several initiatives for Bihar, as the state prepares for elections in November this year. Currently, Bihar’s government is led by the Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) and the BJP coalition, with the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) being a key player. Below are the key schemes announced for the state in the Budget:

Key Schemes for Bihar

Makhana Board:
A new Makhana Board will be established to enhance the production, processing, value addition, and marketing of makhana (fox nuts). The board will also focus on creating farmer producer organizations (FPOs), allowing farmers to benefit from collective bargaining. The board will offer training and support to farmers and ensure they receive the benefits of government schemes.

Support for Food Processing:
Bihar will also receive a National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Management. This institute is expected to boost food processing activities across Eastern India, offering farmers increased income and opening up opportunities for skill development, entrepreneurship, and employment for the youth.

Greenfield Airports:
The state will see the development of greenfield airports, which will be built on undeveloped land, in addition to expanding the capacity of Patna airport and enhancing Bihta’s brownfield airport, which already has some infrastructure.

Western Koshi Canal Project:
Bihar will receive financial backing for the Western Koshi Canal Project in the Mithilanchal region. This irrigation project is set to benefit over 50,000 hectares of farmland, significantly helping farmers in the region.

These measures aim to improve the state’s infrastructure, agriculture, and employment opportunities, ensuring growth and development in Bihar.
