Eleven Bihar residents were among the 30 victims who tragically lost their lives in the stampede at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh earlier this week, as confirmed by the Chief Minister’s office on Saturday.
The victims came from various districts in Bihar, with four from Gopalganj, two from Aurangabad, and one each from Patna, Muzaffarpur, Supaul, Banka, and West Champaran.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh to the families of each deceased. Additionally, an aid of ₹50,000 will be provided to each injured person from the state through the CM’s relief fund.
The stampede occurred on Wednesday near the Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers converge, during the Mauni Amavasya festival. The area was packed with pilgrims who had gathered for a sacred dip, leading to a tragic disaster that also left 60 people injured.
