A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal early Tuesday morning, with tremors shaking Kolkata and several parts of West Bengal. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the quake occurred at 6:10 AM.
According to an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official, the epicenter was recorded near Puri, Odisha, at a depth of 91 km. The coordinates of the quake were noted as latitude 19.52°N and longitude 88.55°E.
Many social media users shared their experiences, with some reporting early morning jolts and using trending hashtags to discuss the impact. One user posted, “Received a Google Earthquake Alert at 6:10 AM in Kolkata. Reports indicate the epicenter might be 175 km from Odisha. Did anyone else feel the tremors?” Another user wrote, “Earthquake in Kolkata! 5.3 magnitude. Just felt it and posting because I’m awake.”
Kolkata lies in Seismic Zone III, indicating a moderate earthquake risk. While major quakes are rare in the region, tremors occasionally occur due to seismic activity in the Bay of Bengal, Nepal, and Northeast India.
3.7-Magnitude Quake Hits Himachal’s Mandi
On Sunday, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district at 8:42 AM. According to the MeT office, the epicenter was located at latitude 31.48°N and longitude 76.95°E near Kiargi in Sundernagar, at a depth of 7 km.
Although tremors were felt in parts of the district, officials confirmed no casualties or property damage. Mandi falls under Seismic Zone V, making it one of the high-risk areas for earthquakes in India.
