On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the state government has decided to implement a ban on the serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels, and public areas. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting.
Sarma explained that while there were existing laws regulating beef consumption, there had been no specific ban on its service in eateries or public events.
“We have decided to prohibit the serving of beef in any restaurant, hotel, or public gathering. This decision goes beyond the previous restriction that prohibited beef near temples. It is now a statewide ban,” Sarma stated during a press briefing.
The Chief Minister, attending the cabinet meeting virtually from Delhi, also revealed plans to expand the road connecting Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport to the city, increasing its capacity from four lanes to six. In addition, a major ₹25,000 crore project to build an expressway connecting Guwahati to Silchar via Meghalaya is in development. These infrastructural projects are expected to significantly boost connectivity, encourage regional economic development, and create new opportunities for trade and tourism in the region.
In a related remark, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika challenged the Congress party to either back the beef ban or “go and settle in Pakistan,” posting his statement on social media.
