MUMBAI: The city has reported its first fatality linked to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), with officials confirming the death of a 53-year-old patient at Nair Hospital after a prolonged battle with the illness. The report was confirmed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a 10th-grade girl from Palghar has also been hospitalized with the syndrome, raising concerns about the spread of the rare nerve disorder. With this latest death, Maharashtra’s toll of suspected GBS-related fatalities has now reached eight.

Pune Emerges as GBS Hotspot
Maharashtra continues to grapple with a surge in GBS cases, with Pune district being the worst affected. Health department data reveals that the state has recorded 197 suspected and confirmed cases of the syndrome so far.

Among these, 172 individuals have been officially diagnosed with GBS. The distribution of cases includes:
– 40 patients from areas under Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)
– 92 cases reported from newly integrated villages within PMC
– 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad
– 28 from Pune Rural
– 8 from other districts

According to the latest health report, 104 patients have been discharged, while 50 are still receiving treatment in intensive care units, and 20 require ventilator support..Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts to manage and contain the outbreak intensify.
