Official sources confirmed that health authorities are thoroughly monitoring developments related to HMPV, which is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets.
While HMPV is typically associated with mild symptoms, including common cold-like signs and flu symptoms, Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), highlighted that its impact tends to be more pronounced in vulnerable groups, such as infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. He reassured the public by explaining that HMPV is not considered a particularly dangerous virus, akin to other respiratory infections that frequently circulate during colder months.
Dr. Goel also stressed that India’s healthcare infrastructure is equipped to handle typical winter-related surges in respiratory illnesses. With preparedness measures in place, including increased stockpiles of medicines and hospital beds, the country is well-positioned to respond swiftly should an outbreak occur.
Interestingly, India has not observed any significant uptick in respiratory infection cases in the recent December 2024 data, which suggests that there is no immediate cause for alarm, even as health authorities continue to keep a close eye on the situation.
