AR Rahman and Saira Banu have announced their separation after 29 years of marriage, which began in 1995 through an arranged union. The couple, who share three children—Ameen, Khatija, and Raheema—are reportedly handling the situation as best they can, though both are not happy about the divorce.
In an interview, Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, spoke about the emotional toll of such a long-term relationship ending. She stated, “It’s a long marriage, and in long marriages, no one is happy calling it quits. I can just say that they’re doing okay but no one is happy.” Shah emphasized that despite the split, both Rahman and Saira are trying to maintain an amicable relationship and avoid any bitterness.
She added, “We are looking at things amicably. We are not looking at any acrimony. They’re both dignified individuals. For 29 years, they have led a very dignified life, and they’re not changing that just because things may not work out as a fairytale ending.” Shah noted that neither of them entered the marriage expecting a divorce, acknowledging the complexity of the situation.
Rahman, expressing his thoughts on the separation, shared a message on X, writing, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”
