Sambhal Mosque Violence: SP MP, MLA’s Son Booked for Provocative Acts, Four Dead in Clashes

The Sambhal police have registered cases against Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq and Sohail Iqbal, son of SP MLA Iqbal Mehmood, over violence linked to a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid. Authorities claim Barq’s provocative remarks escalated tensions, leading to clashes that left four dead and dozens injured, including 24 police and administrative officials.

Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar confirmed six individuals, including Barq and Iqbal, are named in the FIR. Despite Barq being in Bengaluru on the day of the incident, his earlier statement, “Jama Masjid ki hifazat,” allegedly mobilized the mob. Officials said stones were thrown, vehicles were torched, and gunshots from country-made weapons likely caused the fatalities.

Seven FIRs have been filed, and 25 arrests have been made. Authorities say the mob involved residents within a 10-15 km radius of the site.

The violence erupted during a second survey of the mosque, following a petition claiming it was built on the ruins of a temple allegedly demolished by Mughal emperor Babur in 1529. The first survey had been completed peacefully last week.

Political Reactions
Opposition leaders, including SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, criticized the BJP government for its handling of the situation. Rahul Gandhi accused the state administration of a biased and insensitive approach, alleging the BJP’s actions further divided Hindu-Muslim communities.

In contrast, BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj described the violence as “pre-planned,” blaming political motives for the unrest.

Authorities have vowed strict action against those responsible as investigations continue into the incident.
