Sambhal Mosque Violence: SP MP, MLA’s Son Booked for Provocative Actions, Four Dead in Clashes
The recent violence in Sambhal, linked to a court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid, has led to the registration of cases against Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq and Sohail Iqbal, the son of SP MLA Iqbal Mehmood. The clashes, which resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries, including 24 police and administrative officials, were reportedly sparked by Barq’s provocative remarks, which are alleged to have incited local tensions.
Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar confirmed that an FIR has been filed against six individuals, including Barq and Iqbal. Although Barq was in Bengaluru at the time of the incident, his earlier statement, “Jama Masjid ki hifazat,” or “Protection of the Jama Masjid,” is said to have mobilized the crowd. The violence escalated quickly, with stones being thrown, vehicles set on fire, and gunshots fired from country-made weapons, which are believed to have contributed to the fatalities.
In response to the violence, seven FIRs have been registered, and authorities have made 25 arrests. Police investigations reveal that the mob involved included residents from a 10-15 km radius surrounding the mosque.
The unrest occurred during a second survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, following a petition that claimed the mosque was constructed over the remnants of a Hindu temple allegedly demolished by Mughal emperor Babur in 1529. The first survey had been conducted peacefully just a week prior to the outbreak of violence.
Political Reactions
The violence has sparked a strong political reaction. Opposition leaders, including SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, have strongly criticized the BJP-led state government’s handling of the situation. Rahul Gandhi condemned the state administration’s actions, accusing it of being biased and insensitive, and claimed that the BJP’s policies were deepening the divide between Hindu and Muslim communities.
On the other hand, BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj referred to the violence as “pre-planned,” attributing it to political motives and accusing certain factions of intentionally stoking unrest for their gain.
Authorities have pledged to take strict action against those responsible for the violence. Investigations are ongoing, and law enforcement is working to ensure that those behind the unrest are held accountable.
The deadly clashes have highlighted the deeply sensitive nature of the issues surrounding the Shahi Jama Masjid, as well as the political and communal tensions that continue to simmer in parts of India. As investigations unfold, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice and peace in the aftermath of this tragic event.
