Crackdown on Fake Doctors Intensifies in Telangana: Over 300 Arrests Made
Hyderabad: The ongoing crackdown on fake doctors in Telangana is gaining significant traction, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy reaffirming the state’s commitment to eradicating the menace of unqualified practitioners. With strong support from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Telangana State Medical Council (TGMC), authorities have made over 300 arrests and filed more than 400 FIRs in their battle against quackery.
In the past month alone, nearly 50 unqualified individuals posing as medical professionals across various districts have been arrested. The most recent arrest occurred in the Uppal area on Monday, following a joint operation involving the IMA, TGMC, and the Drugs Control Authority (DCA).
Dr. Prabhu Kumar Chalagalli, Chairman of the IMA Anti-Quackery Committee, expressed his support for the government’s efforts, stating, “We have long advocated for stricter action against fake doctors, and it’s encouraging to see both the state’s Chief Minister and Governor acknowledge the severity of the issue. The chief minister’s assurance of decisive action against quacks is a positive step forward in ensuring the safety and credibility of medical professionals.” He further emphasized that many fake practitioners have already been incarcerated following the filing of FIRs.
Authorities have confirmed that around 200 fake doctors have been jailed, with law enforcement intensifying efforts to expedite legal proceedings. “The police are working closely with us to ensure prompt actions, and several cases have already progressed to the courts,” said Dr. G. Srinivas, Chairman of TGMC.
Legal frameworks have also been bolstered, with provisions under the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act being invoked to strengthen the cases against unqualified practitioners. These additional legal measures are expected to fortify the proceedings, ensuring that those found guilty face stringent penalties.
The ongoing operation has highlighted the state’s dedication to maintaining public health standards and safeguarding citizens from the dangers of fake medical practitioners. As the crackdown intensifies, both medical professionals and the general public have expressed optimism about the long-term impact of these efforts.
