Noida: A woman was scammed out of ₹34 lakh in a case involving “digital arrest” by cybercriminals who sent her fake notices from the Enforcement Directorate, officials reported on Sunday.

The fraudsters falsely claimed that a parcel being sent from Mumbai to Iran in her name contained five passports, two debit cards, two laptops, 900 US dollars, and 200 grams of narcotics.

The victim, Nidhi Paliwal, received a call from the criminals around 10 p.m. on August 8, according to her complaint.

Paliwal, a resident of Sector-41, reported the incident to the Gautam Buddha cybercrime police station, which has since registered a case and launched an investigation, said Inspector Vijay Kumar Gautam.

In her complaint, Paliwal stated that the fraudsters sent her a message via WhatsApp, threatening her with serious legal consequences unless she paid ₹34 lakh. Additionally, one of the criminals conducted a video call on Skype with the camera turned off.

The fraudsters also sent her two forged notices from the Enforcement Directorate, containing false accusations. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, confirmed Inspector Gautam.
