Mizoram Police Disrupts Cross-Border Arms Smuggling Network: Five Arrested, Large Cache Recovered

In a significant crackdown, Mizoram Police arrested five individuals, including a senior leader of the Myanmar-based insurgent group Chin National Front (CNF), for allegedly smuggling arms from Myanmar to Bangladesh via northeastern India.

The arrests came after a joint operation conducted with an intelligence agency in the outskirts of Saithah village, located in the jurisdiction of West Phaileng Police Station in Mizoram’s Mamit district. Authorities disrupted a planned arms trade between two major insurgent groups from Myanmar and Bangladesh.

During the raid, police seized a cache of arms and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles, 10,050 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and 13 magazines.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the weapons were intended for trade between the Chin National Front (CNF) of Myanmar and the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-P), an insurgent group operating in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts,” an official revealed.

One of the detained individuals is reported to be a high-ranking leader within the CNF.

“This is one of the most significant arms recoveries in Mizoram, delivering a strong message to illegal operators in the region. It highlights the transnational nature of arms trafficking and ongoing threats to regional security,” a Mizoram police official stated.

A case has been filed at the West Phaileng Police Station, and investigations are ongoing. Police have intensified efforts to dismantle the cross-border arms smuggling network.
