The New York Police Department (NYPD) has released new images of the suspect linked to the fatal shooting of insurance executive Brian Thompson, as the search for the killer continues into its second day. Authorities have issued a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the suspect’s capture and are urging the public to come forward with any tips.

On Wednesday, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the HI New York City youth hostel on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The suspect, who had checked into the hostel using a fake New Jersey driver’s license, had been staying there since November 30. Despite an intensive search, no new leads emerged regarding his location. However, additional photographs of the shooter were recovered during the search. A burner phone, believed to be connected to the suspect, was also discovered near the crime scene.

The tragic shooting occurred around 6:45 AM outside the New York Hilton Midtown, where UnitedHealth Group was hosting an investor day event. Video footage shows the suspect waiting for Thompson’s arrival before shooting him multiple times in the back and leg. The attacker then fled the scene on foot before hopping onto an electric bike, heading toward Central Park.

While UnitedHealth had a security team present at the event, no personnel were stationed outside where Thompson was shot, and the company has yet to comment on its security protocols.

Following the news of Thompson’s death, UnitedHealth’s stock dropped by 5.2%, resulting in a loss of more than $29 billion in market value, although it rebounded slightly by 1% on Wednesday.

In a peculiar twist, shell casings found at the crime scene bore the words “delay” and “depose,” along with a live round. These inscriptions appear to reference the book Delay, Deny, Defend, which explores strategies used by insurers to avoid paying claims. Investigators are now examining whether the words point to a possible motive rooted in anger toward the insurance industry.

Former NYPD sergeant and John Jay College professor Joseph Giacalone described the inscriptions as highly unusual, noting that investigators are weighing whether they were meant as a clue or merely a diversion.

The manhunt continues with the help of drones, canines, and surveillance technology, though facial recognition software and DNA tracing have yet to yield any significant leads.

Meanwhile, police in Minneapolis are investigating hoax bomb threats that were made to both Thompson’s home and his wife’s residence. No suspicious devices have been found, and authorities believe the threats are likely intended to intimidate.

Thompson, known as “BT,” was a seasoned executive at UnitedHealth, having spent 20 years with the company. In 2021, he became the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, overseeing a division projected to generate $280 billion in revenue this year. UnitedHealth was recently criticized in a Senate report for allegedly using automated systems to deny insurance claims.

The presence of the controversial inscriptions has fueled speculation that the shooting may be linked to frustrations over the insurance industry’s practices. Some social media users have even expressed support for the killing, citing widespread dissatisfaction with insurance claim denials and the state of the U.S. healthcare system.

As the investigation continues, authorities are carefully examining every angle, including the possibility that the inscriptions were planted to mislead detectives. The case remains ongoing, with the NYPD urging anyone with information to come forward.
