New Delhi: Congress MP Rakesh Rathore was arrested today in connection with a rape case filed against him, officials confirmed. Rathore, who represents Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur in the Lok Sabha, was taken into custody while addressing a press conference.

The case was registered on January 17 based on a complaint by a woman who accused Rathore of sexually exploiting her for four years under the pretext of marriage and political advancement. She provided police with call records and recordings as evidence.

Adding to the allegations, the woman’s husband also filed a separate complaint last week, claiming that Rathore and his son were pressuring their family to drop the case.

Earlier today, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court dismissed Rathore’s anticipatory bail plea, directing him to surrender. His plea was previously rejected by the MP-MLA court in Sitapur on January 23.

Before joining Congress, Rathore contested the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections as a BJP candidate and as an Independent. He was previously affiliated with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party.
