Autopsy findings from Silchar Medical College in Assam have shed light on the brutal torture endured by a 31-year-old mother of three, who was allegedly raped and burned alive by armed attackers inside her home in Jiribam, Manipur, on November 7. The woman’s body, reportedly 99% burned, displayed signs of third-degree torture, including wounds from nails and burns inflicted while she was alive. Her husband stated in an FIR that she was raped and “brutally killed” in their residence, and 17 other homes in their village of Zairawn were also set ablaze that night, allegedly by members of a valley-based group.
The autopsy report, detailing a nail embedded in her thigh and severe burns that left bones charred and parts of her limbs and facial structure missing, reflects the depth of suffering inflicted before her death. Due to the extent of burns, it was impossible for doctors to confirm sexual assault through a vaginal smear.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Kuki-Zo organizations, who have criticized security agencies for their failure to apprehend those responsible. Calls for central intervention have intensified, with the Indigenous Tribes Advocacy Committee of Pherzawl and Jiribam seeking protection for the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar people, and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum warning of unrest if justice is not served.
This recent attack recalls the surge of violence that has plagued Manipur since May, marked by atrocities against women and ongoing ethnic strife between hill and valley communities. Hundreds remain displaced in shelters across Jiribam and other areas, with the unrest continuing to deepen divisions in the state. Police transported the woman’s remains to Silchar instead of Imphal, citing logistical issues due to the ongoing crisis along NH-37.
