Chennai:
The Madras High Court has directed the establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the reported sexual assault of a female student at Anna University.The Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be made up entirely of female IPS officers.Additionally, the court has directed the state government to provide the victim with a compensation of Rs 25 lakh.
This order came during the hearing of a petition requesting the case to be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The bench, comprising Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice V Lakshminarayan, also emphasized that the survivor’s education should not be disrupted, and that Anna University should waive her fees.
The incident, which occurred on the prestigious university’s campus, has sparked widespread outrage from opposition parties and civil society. So far, one person has been arrested in connection with the assault.
