Today marks the 16th anniversary of the devastating 26/11 attacks, when ten terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba unleashed coordinated terror across Mumbai. The attacks targeted iconic locations including the Taj Hotel, Oberoi Trident Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Leopold Cafe, Nariman House, Cama Hospital, and Metro Cinema.

The tragic events claimed the lives of 166 people, including 20 security personnel and 26 foreigners, leaving over 300 injured. The terrorists infiltrated Mumbai via the sea route from Pakistan, forever scarring the city and its people.

As India pays tribute to the lives lost, it is also a day to honor the extraordinary courage of individuals who risked everything to save others. From political leaders to citizens, heartfelt tributes are pouring in for the victims and heroes of this dark chapter in India’s history.


Heroes Who Displayed Extraordinary Bravery During 26/11

Tukaram Omble

A Mumbai Police Assistant Sub-Inspector, Tukaram Omble made the ultimate sacrifice while capturing terrorist Ajmal Kasab alive. Unarmed, he held onto Kasab’s rifle, enduring fatal gunfire, but ensuring the terrorist was caught. His heroic act provided critical evidence of Pakistan’s involvement in the attacks.


Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan

Leading a team of NSG commandos, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan fought valiantly at the Taj Palace Hotel to rescue hostages. Fatally wounded during the operation, his last words were, “Don’t come up, I will handle them.” He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry honor.


Hemant Karkare

Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, a 1982 batch IPS officer, was ambushed near Cama Hospital along with fellow officers Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar. Despite being hit by multiple bullets, he led operations with unwavering resolve. Karkare’s leadership and sacrifice remain etched in the nation’s memory.


Mallika Jagad

As the banquet manager at the Taj Hotel, Mallika Jagad protected guests during the siege. She locked doors, turned off lights, and kept guests calm amidst explosions and gunfire. Her courage and composure under extreme pressure saved countless lives.


Karambir Singh Kang

The General Manager of the Taj Hotel faced an unimaginable loss when his wife and two young sons perished in the attack. Despite his personal tragedy, he worked tirelessly to assist evacuation efforts, coordinating with security forces to save hundreds of lives.


Thomas Varghese

A senior waiter at the Taj Hotel’s Wasabi restaurant, Thomas Varghese ensured the safety of guests by helping them escape first. Tragically, he was shot by terrorists as he was leaving the premises. His selfless act of prioritizing others over his own life remains an inspiration.


A Day of Remembrance

The 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks were a stark reminder of the threats faced by the nation. Today, we honor the victims and salute the heroes whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire. Their legacy underscores the resilience of Mumbai and the spirit of humanity.
