Today marks the 16th anniversary of the tragic 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, a harrowing chapter in India’s history. Targeting high-profile locations such as the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Leopold Café, Nariman House, Cama Hospital, and Metro Cinema, the attack left an indelible scar on the city.

The death toll from the attacks reached 166, including 20 security personnel and 26 foreign nationals. More than 300 were left injured. The terrorists infiltrated Mumbai by sea, forever changing the lives of its residents and the country as a whole.     Assistant Sub-Inspector Tukaram Omble of the Mumbai Police became a symbol of unwavering bravery. He made the ultimate sacrifice while capturing Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist, alive. Despite being unarmed and under heavy gunfire, Omble held onto Kasab’s rifle, ensuring that the terrorist was apprehended and that vital evidence was gathered, linking Pakistan to the attack. His courage saved countless lives and helped bring justice.
  • Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
    Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan of the National Security Guard (NSG) was at the forefront of the operation to rescue hostages at the Taj Palace Hotel. During a fierce firefight, he was fatally wounded while leading his team with exceptional bravery. His last words, “Don’t come up, I will handle them,” epitomized his selflessness and determination. Major Unnikrishnan was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military honor, for his heroism.

    Hemant Karkare, the chief of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), was instrumental in leading operations during the attacks. On the fateful night, Karkare and his team were ambushed near Cama Hospital by terrorists. Despite being struck by multiple bullets, Karkare remained resolute in his efforts to protect the city. His leadership and sacrifice, along with that of his colleagues Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar, will never be forgotten.

    Mallika Jagad, the banquet manager at the Taj Hotel, displayed exceptional courage during the siege. While the hotel was under attack, she ensured the safety of guests by locking doors, dimming the lights, and maintaining calm in the face of explosions and gunfire. Her quick thinking and composure under extreme stress saved many lives and showcased the power of calmness in a crisis.
  • Karambir Singh Kang
    Karambir Singh Kang, the General Manager of the Taj Hotel, endured unimaginable personal loss during the attacks as his wife and two children were killed. Despite this, he remained at the scene, assisting with evacuation efforts and coordinating with security forces to save hundreds of guests. His determination to put others’ safety above his personal grief exemplifies the spirit of heroism.
  • Thomas Varghese
    Thomas Varghese, a senior waiter at the Taj Hotel’s Wasabi restaurant, demonstrated remarkable bravery by prioritizing the safety of guests. As the restaurant was under siege, he helped guests escape before attempting to flee himself. Tragically, he was shot by terrorists during his escape. His selfless sacrifice remains a testament to the enduring spirit of heroism.
