Jio Partners with SpaceX for Starlink Internet in India Following Airtel’s Deal
A day after Airtel announced its partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink internet in India, Reliance Jio revealed a similar agreement with Elon Musk’s company on Wednesday.
As part of the collaboration, Jio will offer Starlink solutions through its retail outlets and online platforms. However, the deal is contingent on SpaceX obtaining the necessary approvals to officially launch Starlink services in India.
In a statement, Jio highlighted the potential of the partnership, stating, “By combining Jio’s position as the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic with Starlink’s advanced low Earth orbit satellite network, we aim to deliver seamless broadband connectivity across India, including remote and rural areas. Jio will not only distribute Starlink equipment through its retail network but will also facilitate installation, activation, and customer support.”
This partnership follows a previous dispute between Jio and SpaceX regarding spectrum allocation for satellite services in India. While Reliance advocated for spectrum auctions, the Indian government sided with Musk’s stance, favoring administrative allocation in line with global practices.
Airtel’s Starlink Agreement with SpaceX
On Tuesday, Bharti Airtel became the first Indian company to sign a deal with SpaceX for Starlink services, pending regulatory approvals.
As per Airtel’s announcement, the partnership will explore Starlink equipment distribution through its retail stores and provide services to business clients, as well as support connectivity for schools, health centers, and underserved communities in rural India.
Bharti Airtel’s Managing Director and Vice Chairman, Gopal Vittal, called the collaboration with SpaceX a major step forward, reinforcing Airtel’s commitment to next-generation satellite-based connectivity.
