In April 2016, Thane Police intercepted two vehicles and discovered 2-3 kg of Ephedrine powder, worth ₹80 lakh. Ephedrine, a controlled substance under the Narcotics Act, was linked to a factory in Solapur, Maharashtra, owned by Avon Life Sciences Limited, a company believed to be controlled by Kulkarni’s husband, Vicky Goswami.
The authorities alleged that the ephedrine was intended for processing into methamphetamine in Kenya, to be exported to the US. Reports suggested that Mamta had attended a meeting at the Bliss Hotel in Kenya in January 2016, where the details of the drug operation were reportedly discussed.

On Wednesday, police executed a search warrant at the HI New York City youth hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The suspect had checked into the hostel using a fake New Jersey driver’s license and had been staying there since November 30. However, the search yielded no new leads regarding the suspect’s whereabouts but did provide additional photos of the shooter. A cell phone found near the crime scene, believed to be linked to the suspect, was identified as a burner phone.
Thompson, 50, was shot in the back and leg at approximately 6:45 AM outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, where UnitedHealth Group was hosting an investor day event. Video footage shows the attacker waiting for Thompson’s arrival at the hotel. The suspect shot Thompson multiple times from behind before fleeing the scene on foot and then using an electric bike toward Central Park.
Although UnitedHealth had a security team present at the hotel for the event, there was no one stationed outside where Thompson was shot. The company has not commented on its security arrangements.
Following the news of the shooting, UnitedHealth’s shares fell 5.2%, wiping out more than $29 billion in market value, although the stock had gained about 1% on Wednesday.
A strange clue was discovered at the crime scene: shell casings with the words “delay” and “depose” inscribed on them, along with a live round. The phrases seem to echo the title of the book Delay, Deny, Defend, which describes tactics allegedly used by insurers to deny claims. Law enforcement is exploring whether these inscriptions indicate a motive tied to anger against the insurance industry.
Former NYPD sergeant Joseph Giacalone, now a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, remarked that such an inscription is highly unusual. Investigators are considering whether the words were a distraction or a clue to the shooter’s motive.

Arjun stabbed his father Rajesh Kumar (51), mother Komal (46), and sister Kavita (23) while they slept.
